Did you know that a quarter of all American senior citizens experience social isolation? Even surrounded by people, our seniors sometimes feel alone on their aging journey. Luckily, regular visits from friends and family go a long way toward improving mental health prospects and reducing feelings of loneliness. The right activities for seniors make a massive difference in an aging adult’s quality of life. When was the last time you signed your loved ones out for a day trip? The next time you come to visit a loved one at Alura Senior Living, a Florida senior living community in Rockledge, consider planning an adventure! We’ve created this guide full of fun and appropriate things to do in the area. Each one makes the perfect outing for an individual in senior care.
Read on to discover local activities seniors will love!
Birdwatching at Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary
Have you heard of “forest bathing?” Psychologists have found that experiencing nature yields numerous mental health benefits for individuals of all ages. The seniors in your life will love utilizing all their senses as they explore this stunning local nature sanctuary and take in the native Florida Scrub-Jays in their natural habitat. This excursion does involve some walking and navigation, so it’s best suited for the fully mobile residents of our Florida independent living in Rockledge. It’s a one-mile loop and should be an easy hike. There’s plenty of wildlife and vegetation to see, so take your time!
Take a Historical Tour of Lawndale
Museums can sometimes involve a lot of walking. That can make them a bit too much for some of our less ambulatory residents. That’s why we’re lucky to have Lawndale Historic Museum as one of our neighbors! The curators staged the house to resemble a family home from 1895. It’s a perfect destination during the holiday season when it’s decorated for Christmas! Unlike traditional museums, Lawndale is a historic home. Knowledgeable docents in period costumes will lead you through the premises. Although the full tour requires visitors to access stairs, the tour guides can make alternate arrangements for less mobile visitors.
Pickleball at Rockledge Country Club
Pickleball has been taking senior communities by storm! This tennis-like paddle sport is popular among the aging population, as it’s low impact and easy to learn. If you have an active loved one at our senior living in Rockledge, FL, consider spending a day at Rockledge Country Club. The club offers open play Tuesdays through Sundays from 8:00 AM through 5:00 PM. They welcome players of all levels and are well aware of the sport’s popularity among the older crowd.
Go Out for Brunch at Le Crave Cafe
While every meal at Alura Senior Living is delectable, sometimes you want to go out and try something new. What could be fancier than a handmade crepe brunch at Le Crave Cafe here in Rockledge? It’s one of the highest-rated brunch spots in the city, with a classy, upscale ambiance. In addition to its impressive beverage menu, full of unique coffee drinks and hot teas, Le Crave boasts a full breakfast menu until noon daily. Every dish combines unique flavors, including sweet and savory options.
Craft Away at the CB&G Store
Residents of our Florida memory care in Rockledge adore arts and crafts. If you’re looking for a destination for an artsy resident, head over to CB&G for adult craft classes and shopping. Visitors can take a crochet class or even relax by coloring a bespoke image. The event calendar is constantly shifting, so it may be wise to call ahead and see what they’re offering (and which events are most appropriate for an older crowd). If you’re interested in shopping, you can browse handmade soaps, crafts, and home goods five days a week.
Catch Live Music at River Rocks
Nothing energizes a person quite like live music—except the combination of live music and great food, with a stunning dockside view! River Rocks is an excellent venue for seniors who love a concert but can’t handle larger crowds or late-night events. Live acts play on the covered waterfront dock nearly every weekend, starting as early as 2:00 PM. Meanwhile, you’ll enjoy a casual seafood menu and a view of energetic dolphins. It’s an entertaining early evening activity, and your loved one can remain seated if necessary.
Try a Cooking Class at Alfredo’s Paradiso Kitchen
Perhaps your loved one is more interested in preparing the food than eating it? Alfredo’s Paradiso Kitchen offers hands-on cooking classes. You can choose from a series of open classes or schedule a private lesson that will go at your senior’s pace. Choose the class that is best suited to your loved one’s palate. Options include French cuisine, vegetarian dinner, and sauce-making. You’ll get a wonderful meal out of the deal, too!
