What to Do After a Dementia Diagnosis

It’s an unfortunate truth that over 6 million Americans are living with dementia. When your loved one is given a dementia diagnosis, it takes an emotional toll on everyone. You might be feeling overwhelmed and underprepared. You might wonder, how are you going to take care of your loved one now? Remember, you’re not alone. There are plenty of dementia care options for you and your family to consider. Keep reading to see exactly what you can do after learning about a dementia diagnosis.

What Are Common Dementia Symptoms?

Dementia is actually not classified as an official disease. Rather, it’s an umbrella term for issues that the elderly can experience. This brain condition can cause problems with thinking, memory, and behavior. One of the most common symptoms of dementia is memory loss. Patients may have trouble remembering things like appointments, names, and important events from their past. They may also repeat themselves or forget things they just learned. People with dementia may also have difficulty with language and communication. They could have trouble finding the right words sometimes. It’s also hard for them to complete tasks that require planning and organization. Examples include managing their finances or cooking a meal. As dementia progresses, people may experience changes in their mood and behavior. They may become more irritable, anxious, or withdrawn. They’re also known to have difficulty controlling their emotions. These symptoms can be distressing for both them and their loved ones. If your loved one has received a dementia diagnosis, take note. It’s important that you seek reliable support and help as soon as you can.

Communicate and Seek Support

After receiving the diagnosis, communicate with family and friends. This can help them understand what you’re going through and provide support. It’s also a good idea to reach out to local resources. Consider organizations that provide services specifically for people with dementia and their families. There are support groups or memory cafes dedicated to just that in most communities. These resources can help everyone feel less isolated. Some can also provide practical assistance with tasks like transportation or home care. You can then build a network of support that will help you navigate the challenges of living with dementia.

Develop a Care Plan

A healthcare provider can help you understand what to expect as dementia progresses. They’ll be able to recommend the best treatment options. They may also refer your loved one to other experts. Geriatricians or neurologists specialize in dementia care, for instance. Together, you can develop a care plan that addresses the individual’s specific needs and preferences. It’s also smart to think about legal and financial arrangements. This can include creating or updating a will. You might also establish a power of attorney and set up a trust. These steps can help ensure that the person with dementia receives the care they need. They deserve to feel secure in their overall situation as they deal with everyday symptoms. It’s also important to consider long-term care options. You might look to assisted living or memory care solutions. For these, you’ll want to plan for the associated costs.

Promote Healthy Lifestyle Habits

Staying physically active is ideal for individuals with dementia. Exercise can help improve strength, balance, and flexibility. This in turn can reduce the risk of falls and other injuries. Encouraging physical activity can be as simple as taking short walks together. Exercise like this has also been shown to improve mood and cognitive function. Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for individuals with dementia. Make sure they eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. This can support their overall wellness and reduce the risk of other health conditions. Engaging in mentally stimulating activities is a wise move, too. It’s another important way to support brain health for individuals with dementia. This can include activities like reading, playing games, doing puzzles, or pursuing hobbies. Not only might these activities slow the progression of dementia. They can also improve the quality of life for the individual. Be willing to get creative and make it fun. Choose activities that the individual enjoys and can participate in comfortably. Caregivers can also consider participating to provide companionship.

Consider Senior Living Options

As dementia progresses, it can become increasingly challenging to provide care at home. In these cases, senior living options may be the best move. These living options can provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals with dementia. Further, they can provide assistance with activities of daily living. This could include bathing, dressing, and medication management. When considering senior living options, visit the potential communities. Ask questions about the community’s approach to dementia care options, in particular. That’s why Alura Senior Living Memory Care can be of such great value. Manage Challenging Behaviors

Caregivers need to know of certain challenges that can arise with dementia. They might witness aggression, agitation, wandering, or confusion. These behaviors can be distressing for everyone. Understanding these behaviors and their potential causes can help caregivers better manage them. There are some common triggers for challenging behaviors. These include changes in routine, overstimulation, and physical discomfort. By identifying these triggers, caregivers can take steps to address them in advance. Remember to be patient and persistent when addressing triggers. It may take time to find the best strategies for managing these challenges. Redirection, reassurance, and validation are always great tactics to use.

While we didn't quite bring home the trophy this year, we're told the competition was incredibly closeโ€”and we couldn't be prouder of Chef Jon's outstanding performance! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘

Please join us in congratulating Chef Jon for representing our community with such passion, creativity, and deliciousness. We already think he's a winner! โค๏ธ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ๐Ÿ…
